Rome, Italy
Requalification of a public garden and a sports hall
International competition, Finalist, 2022
with Bodar, Aei, Edoardo Fanteria
The proposal organizes the new garden in relation to the topography of the archaeological remains, reconnecting parallel streets. The selection of the vegetation responds to the study of compatible root systems not to damage the underground structure. The gym sits on the corner of the site. The cantilever’s upper volume produces a covered access area from the street on the ground floor and reduces the extent of the surface of excavation.
The public competition on the site of a crumbling electrical substation building and a fenced terrain requested a small gym and a new public park for the community. The location in the central district of Rome combines the proximity of the historical urban fabric with the necessity of reducing the excavation for construction sites to safeguard the archaeological area.
The red-pigmented reinforced concrete volume conceals a generous sports hall with an upside-down barrel vault ceiling distributing the natural light of the large horizontal windows. As an extra space, the rooftop allows for outdoor activities and events with a panoramic view of Rome.
